MOOP The Lake was inspired by the dramatic increase in trash being left in the Lake Tahoe / Truckee area due to the COVID-related increase in tourism. Around the lake people are taking the matter into their own hands by organizing cleanups. The event is supported in large part by Tahoe Burners.
As Burners, MOOPing is what we do. With the cancellation of Burning Man this year we won’t be dusting off the week after Labor Day. Lets MOOP at home this year.
MOOPing kicks off on TuTu Tuesday, September 8, at locations around the lake. Dig out your best tutu and join us for socially distanced MOOPing for an hour or two.
MOOP stands for Matter Out Of Place, a term believed to be coined by Burning Man. Burning Man, with an attendance of nearly 80,000, is the world’s largest Leave No Trace event, and MOOPing (clean up) is part of that process. Teams stay on the playa long after Burners go home, working for weeks to restore the playa to its natural state.
Vetted leads will clean up at specific locations around the lake, preferably close to their own neighborhood. Each crew has one lead. We will provide the lead a t-shirt and some swag for your socially distanced crew. We hope each lead can help rally volunteers for their location. Due to COVID restrictions gathering in any number is NOT ALLOWED AT THIS TIME. We can still do this though. Space yourself out and do a sweep.
This is a radically self-reliant event. Bring everything you may need for 1-2 hours of cleanup.
